Pain Management: 4 Ways To Keep Your Pain At Bay

Many people who are dealing with acute or chronic pain take NSAID medications, including prescription-strength NSAIDs. Unfortunately, there are some extreme side effects with these medications, which is why so many people are turning to safer, natural ways of treating their pain. If this is you, here are a few natural ways of managing your pain:

1. Laugh a Little.

Apart from relieving some of your stress and burning off a small amount of calories, a good laugh that comes straight from the belly can help with managing your pain in a natural, safe way. This is because endorphins are released when you laugh. Some research has suggested that endorphins can play a role in treating pain. So, when you need to eliminate your pain, head to a local pub that has a comedy night or just throw on your favorite comedy film, sit back and relax as the pain slowly melts away.

2. Get Some Sleep.

Laying down for a nap or a little earlier for bedtime each night can fix a lot of things. Apparently, in addition to improving your alertness throughout the day, some extra shut-eye may even be able to help you manage your pain sensitivity.  One study examined 18 individuals and split them into two groups. The first group went to bed at regular time, while the second group needed to be in bed for 10 hours (and they ended up sleeping nearly two hours longer than the other group). When tested for pain tolerance, the second group was able to withstand direct pain 25 percent longer than the first group who had less sleep.

3. Consume Foods High in Resveratrol.

According to scientific research, foods with a certain compound, resveratrol, in them may be able to help you manage your acute and chronic pain. Specifically, resveratrol has a positive impact when administered to a patient when they go under the knife. Some of these foods include dark chocolate, peanuts, grapes and red wine.

4. Take Fish Oil Supplements.

Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as fish oil, can help in treating your pain. According to one study, 250 patients were instructed to 1,200 mg of fish oil per day after being diagnosed with neck and/or back pain. After roughly 75 days, 50 percent of the patients filled out and returned a questionnaire. The results from the questionnaires showed that 59 percent of the patients had stopped taking prescription NSAIDs, 60 percent had an improvement in overall pain and 60 percent had an improvement in joint pain.

If you're looking for a natural way to treat pain, the aforementioned methods may be it. If you need additional help in pain management, consider speaking to a professional in your area. To find out more, speak with someone like Potter's House Apothecary, Inc.
